He is also famous for the creation of the world-famous Esalen Institute for Integral Personality Development. Michael Murphy, a psychologist and philosopher with a degree from Stanford University — is a leading expert in the field and a master, as well as an expert on the history of religions and shamanism. Murphy spent his entire life searching for the answer to the question: is there a limit to human capabilities? It is hard to believe, but after spending half a century, he was convinced that there is no limit, and the potential is limitless. This bold idea he proves in the monograph "The future of the body: a study of further human evolution". The book contains descriptions of more than ten thousand cases of extraordinary human abilities. After graduating from university, Murphy ended up in India, in the town of Pondicherry. Biographers call this moment a turning point in his fate. He stayed in India for a year and a half, living and studying in the Sri Aurobindo Indian spiritual community. Already in those years (1956-1957), this place became famous not only as the world's largest art center, but also as an experimental laboratory for human evolution-first of all, meditative and psychedelic experiments are meant.
Life at the ashram inspired Murphy so much that when he returned to the United States, he decided to open a similar research center in his homeland. It was a bold, unusual and very successful project. Together with psychologist Richard Price, Murphy created a unique center. From day one, this institution was declared a zone free of politics, moral dogmas and social stereotypes. So far, Esalen is studying dozens of practices that reveal the potential of human capabilities. World-renowned scientists, spiritual leaders and instructors teach here.
Murphy also played a significant role in recent Russian history: he initiated Boris Yeltsin's trip to America in 1990, which ended the Cold War and began constructive diplomacy. So to all the merits of Murphy, you can safely add peacemaking.
Today, the 80-year-old Murphy remains a key figure in transpersonal psychology. Those lucky enough to have the privilege of speaking to Murphy in his lectures or interviews claim that he is a strikingly sincere, inquisitive person and an incredibly talented storyteller. Many well-known politicians, economists, scientists, businessmen, artists, artists and ordinary people under Murphy's influence became interested in developing practices-meditation - and even made them the main activities in their lives. The theory that internal self-improvement has the most powerful impact on a person's life in general (and on social success in particular!) is only now beginning to find understanding. Murphy had said that half a century ago. (Text author: Nika Makarevich)
