After receiving his degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Arnold Mindell went to Zurich, Switzerland to continue his physics education. Here he got acquainted with the works of the famous psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and shifted the focus of his interests to analytical psychology. He studied at the Jung Institute, where he received a degree in analysis. He was very interested in the relationship between physical experiences, especially physical symptoms, and how they are expressed in dreams. Mindell published his research in his first book, The Dream Body: The Role of the Body in Revealing the Self (Dreambody: The Body’s Role in Revealing the Self», 1982). Subsequently, he investigated how the dream mind produces unconscious signals, or "double signals" that manifest in a person in the process of communicating with other people. He found that awareness of such signals increases the effectiveness of interpersonal communication.
Due to his focus on signals and processes of this kind, Mindell called the direction of his work " process-oriented psychology." His interest in interpersonal communication led him to explore conflict in large groups. He discovered that the dream processes he found at the level of individual and interpersonal relationships were also useful in solving problems in large and socially diverse groups.
After writing a series of books on these discoveries, Mindell renewed his interest in physics and returned to the study of hidden signals, which are usually not taken into account in classical psychological approaches. Together with Amy Mindell, his partner and wife, Mindell began to explore new ways to work with people in comatose, vegetative, and near-death states of consciousness. In recent years, his interest in quantum physics has led him to explore the relationship between psychology and theoretical physics and new ways to work with implicit states of consciousness. It uses wave and information concepts to explore pre-verbal and dream-like states of awareness.
In the early 1980s, Mindell began applying his findings to solving conflicts in large groups. He became the author of the term "working with the world" (English worldwork). Mindell is actively involved in the work of a large international research community dedicated to the study and training of procedural work (Institute of Procedural Work).
